Shockwave Therapy

ShockwaveTherapy -Non Invasive Treatment

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes acoustic waves to encourage tissue repair and alleviate pain. By sending pulses to the injured area, it creates microtrauma, which improves blood circulation and speeds up the healing process. This treatment effectively reduces pain and enhances mobility, allowing patients to remain active and continue enjoying their daily activities.

Originally designed to treat kidney stones, Shockwave Therapy applies high-pressure acoustic waves to specific tissue areas. In podiatry, smaller devices use this technology to target soft tissues in the feet, boosting blood flow and stimulating tissue regeneration.

Delivered through a device that resembles a small handheld gun, Shockwave Therapy directs compressed air through a piston into a transmitter, generating rapid pressure vibrations that penetrate deep into the tissue. These acoustic waves trigger the body’s natural healing mechanisms, enhancing blood flow, accelerating tissue recovery, and minimizing pain. For chronic injuries, the therapy disrupts the degenerative cycle by inducing mild inflammation, prompting the body to initiate repairs.

There are two primary types of Shockwave Therapy: extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and focused shockwave therapy (FSWT). The focused version allows for deeper tissue penetration, making it suitable for addressing hard-to-reach areas.

Is Shockwave Therapy Painful?

Shockwave Therapy is generally well-received by patients, though some may experience mild discomfort as the treatment targets painful areas. This discomfort indicates that the treatment is being applied to the correct location. The therapy can be adjusted to suit individual pain tolerance levels.

Patients may feel some soreness following the treatment, but this usually decreases as healing progresses. Shockwave Therapy promotes increased blood circulation, leading to gradual improvement in the treated area.

Shockwave Therapy at Carlingford Foot Clinic is often integrated into a broader treatment plan, which may include dry needling, ultrasound, strength and conditioning exercises, footwear modifications, strapping, and orthotics.

It has emerged as one of the more effective solutions for addressing foot and ankle conditions.
